Conversion of Biomass to Energy
Biomasss Pre-treatments and Analysis of Sugars
Dr. Darrin Smith & Gary Selby
This project will aim to convert various sources of biomass available in Kentucky (e.g., switchgrass, corn stover, wood industry waste) into sugars to feed specialized algae for oil production. This process will include mechanical and/or chemical pretreatment, enzymatic saccharification, and analysis of the freed sugars along with by-products that are formed.
Ionic Liquids for Biomass Utilization
Dr. Laurel Morton & Dr. Martin Brock
Research is evaluating the use of ionic liquids as solvents for the dissolution of biomass. These unique, environmentally friendly solvents may facilitate easier conversion of biomass components to either biofuels or valuable by-products.
