EKU Student Takes First Place at KAS Conference for Chemistry Oral Presentation
Chunfen Jin, an Eastern Kentucky University graduate student, placed first in her category at the 97th annual meeting of the Kentucky Academy of Sciences at Murray State University, Nov. 4-6. She performs under Dr. Buchang Shi, doing various types of research, including CRAFT (Center for Renewable and Alternative Fuel Technology) related projects.
Competing against six other students from across the state at a conference with nearly 350 attendees, Jin presented her research, “Explanations for the Formation of Branched Hydrocarbons Produced by Co Catalyzed Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis.”
Jin received the Best Oral Research Presentation ranking in the Graduate Chemistry Division. Her research, under the direction of Dr. Buchang Shi, explored whether branched hydrocarbons are primary products or secondary products of the Fischer-Tropsch (FT) reaction.
The Kentucky Academy of Sciences, a society formed to encourage scientific research, to promote the diffusion of scientific knowledge and to unify the scientific interests of the Commonwealth, holds annual meetings, offering many workshops and presentations.
EKU will host the 2012 KAS meeting in the New Science Building next November.
